Someone write this piece of comment about the future of this story from the maker perspective:
What will happen next:
The director will be contacted by a number of production companies who want to sign him.
In the meantime, he’ll get contacted by the in-house division of various ad agencies, and/or clients directly.
He’ll direct and produce a TV and web campaign for $40k, $50k total at one of the in-house divisions, except it won’t be as good as this piece, because he’ll have to work off of an actual client brief, and Legal will step in and kill all the creative flourishes and artistry.
Still, he’ll sign with a production company after that job, because he now has a couple of spots for his reel.
He and his new production company will triple bid on job after job and lose out, only to find out later that the agencies took creative elements from his director’s treatment and used it in their campaign (directed and produced by their in-house director and production team, that no one knew they were bidding against).
Another agency will rip off most of his viral spec directly but never give him the chance to bid.
After a year he’ll finally bid and be the recommend for a global big budget campaign, but the cost consultant will step in at the last minute and tell his production company “You can’t charge $500k for this, our IPG / WPP / Dentsu/ (take your pick) database shows he directed and produced a whole campaign for us last year for $50k. We need you to slash the budget to $80k, max.”
Meanwhile, elsewhere, a college student in Lithuania shoots a spec commercial for Nike that goes viral, and the whole process repeats itself as he agrees to produce and direct a TV and web campaign directly with the ad agency for $1,500 and a potato.
The end.
