The children leaving home can be a hard time for both parents and those departing. Here we analyse the new ad from DNB bank which shines light on a new guidebook purposefully built for this distressing time. We’ll judge this ad based on memorability, effectiveness, style, humor and overall execution. Take a look through our notes and see if our thoughts match your own!
Memorability – 8 / 10
The ad features great humor which goes a long way in ensuring it is memorable and really relates directly to the situation. The script and choreography have been well balanced to deliver a sense of humor that almost all adults will appreciate. The commercial is targeting parents with millennial children and the cast have been well selected to represent these demographics spot on. The ad addresses the problem from the perspective of the parents and their leaving son with humor that is very catchy and especially easy for all adults of this life stage to relate to.
Effectiveness – 8 / 10
We can very much imagine a large swarm of parents and millennials racing to the app store in search of this app after hearing about it from this ad. Whether it is because they actually want to find useful information, or because they believe the app will provide further humor surrounding the subject as suggested by the contents of the commercial. The ad does not overdue the drama and as such gets the balance just right to make the gags especially relatable.
Style – 8 / 10
Great quality camera work ensures the shots are not too complex and the viewer is allowed to pay close attention to the “drama” in the content. The homes used in the setting of the shots are kep simple and modest to ensure the commercial appeals to a wide range of family profiles.
Heart or Humor – 9 / 10
The humor is created to perfectly emphasise the most common and funny “issues” that can arise from a young person leaving home. The main issue is meant to be the sadness of separation, but this concept offers us a clever spin that highlights more obvious issues at the forefront. This relates strongly to both sides of the situation, while also emphasizing the need for a guide that actually solves practical problems and provides help that a lot of people will very much appreciate.
Execution – 8 / 10
As awareness campaigns go, this one is quite brilliant. Catchy humor, great casting, script and presentation combine to build ad that certainly delivers a very memorable and attractive message. If we were to add one little thing, it would be a few more seconds that highlight some or one of the most crucial aspects that the guides actually cover aside from those depicted by the characters in the clip. This is a very small note that the director would perhaps argue is an unnecessary touch. The main objective of the ad is to highlight the existence of the guide in a fun and informative light, and the concept does that exceptionally.
