Blizzard Entertainment’s latest Diablo IV expansion, Vessels of Hatred, has arrived with a full cinematic blitz, courtesy of ad agency 72andSunny. The two-minute cinematic, titled Ballad of the Blood, directed by Jon Watts (of Spider-Man fame) and featuring the vocals of pop sensation Camila Cabello, offers a blockbuster-style deep dive into the dark and twisted world of Sanctuary. But does this high-budget campaign deliver the emotional intensity and excitement gamers crave, or is it just a glossy spectacle that misses the mark?

The Plot Thickens: A New Heroine and New Villain

The Ballad of the Blood cinematic introduces viewers to Nyrelle, the expansion’s central protagonist, struggling against the corruption of Mephisto, Diablo’s notorious Lord of Hatred. The premise is solid: Nyrelle, trapped in a dark conflict with her inner demons and the evil influence of the Soul Stone, mirrors the heavy atmosphere the Diablo series is famous for. The new Spiritborn class is featured to ramp up the stakes, battling various demonic entities in a lush jungle environment—an unusual and fresh setting for the traditionally gothic Diablo aesthetic.

Watts’ direction plays up the film-like qualities of the story, and it’s hard not to notice the visual finesse—thanks in part to its shooting location in Thailand, which adds an exotic edge. The campaign’s unique choice to tell a longer, more immersive story than standard ads is commendable. However, the ad spends so much time flexing its cinematic muscles that the narrative risks feeling secondary to the spectacle.

In a foggy, forested setting, a man dressed in tribal warrior attire with a jaguar headdress and armed with a spear resembles an otherworldly character straight out of Diablo. He is accompanied by similarly dressed individuals, creating an intense and mystical scene.
The lush jungles of Thailand provide a striking backdrop for Diablo’s latest cinematic trailer.

Camila Cabello and ‘Behind Blue Eyes’: Does the Music Hit the Right Note?

One of the more polarizing aspects of this campaign is the use of Camila Cabello’s haunting re-record of Behind Blue Eyes. Known for its melancholic tone, the song adds an eerie, emotional layer to the already heavy storyline. On the one hand, it’s a clever juxtaposition—the soft vulnerability of Cabello’s voice set against the brutal world of Diablo. But for die-hard fans of the series, this musical choice might feel out of place, diluting the ominous, gritty atmosphere the franchise is known for.

Cabello’s star power is undeniable, and her presence could draw in non-gaming audiences. However, there’s a danger that the crossover appeal could come across as pandering, appealing more to casual listeners than core fans. It’s a bold but questionable choice that might leave long-time players scratching their heads.

A Visually Stunning, But Narrative-Light Experience

Visually, Ballad of the Blood is breathtaking. Jon Watts’ direction doesn’t disappoint, delivering striking jungle backdrops, intense action sequences, and eerie demonic designs. The detailed CGI and rich color palette are on par with blockbuster films, which speaks to the campaign’s high production value. The commercial’s pacing feels a little off—perhaps too focused on style over substance. With all the energy spent creating a visually stunning world, the emotional depth of Nyrelle’s inner conflict with Mephisto could have been further fleshed out.

The ad’s two-minute length might be a double-edged sword. While it’s refreshing to see a campaign embrace long-form storytelling in an era of 15-second spots, the depth it aims for sometimes gets lost in the whirlwind of visuals. By the end, the viewer might remember the visuals, but the story? That’s less certain.

Spiritborn Class: A Tease or a Showstopper?

The introduction of the new Spiritborn class is undoubtedly intriguing. These characters seem like a force to be reckoned with, showcasing dynamic new powers. But the commercial only offers a brief glimpse into what makes them unique. It’s enough to pique curiosity, but the ad feels more like a teaser than a comprehensive introduction to this exciting new element. This commercial might feel frustratingly vague for fans eager to know what sets the Spiritborn apart.

Final Thoughts: Does the Campaign Succeed?

Ballad of the Blood is a daring and ambitious move by Blizzard and 72andSunny, and it’s clear that the creative team wanted to push the boundaries of what game trailers could achieve. The involvement of Hollywood director Jon Watts and pop icon Camila Cabello underscores the campaign’s cinematic aspirations. But while it hits the mark visually, some elements—especially the song choice and pacing—might alienate traditional fans who expect more substance and darker tones from their Diablo experience.

Pros:

  • Visually stunning, with film-quality direction by Jon Watts.
  • Camila Cabello’s vocals add a unique emotional layer.
  • Fresh jungle setting and new Spiritborn class are intriguing.
  • Breaks the mold by embracing a longer, more immersive ad format.

Cons:

  • The narrative feels underdeveloped, more style than substance.
  • The song choice might alienate hardcore Diablo fans.
  • A lack of detailed introduction to the Spiritborn class.
