Boston Dynamics unveiled the launch advert for the new Spot robot. Announced last year, this robot inspires the writers of the Black Mirror episode “Metalhead“.
With only a few copies available Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot is not for sale, but it can be rented to companies.

In the 120-sec promotional film, the robot is shown working under different conditions (factories, night or in the rain).

The marketing message of the advert is: “Spot is an agile mobile robot that you can customize for a wide range of applications. The base platform provides rough-terrain mobility, 360-degree obstacle avoidance, and various levels of navigation, remote control, and autonomy. You can customize Spot by adding specialized sensors, software, and other payloads. Early customers are already testing Spot to monitor construction sites, provide remote inspection at gas, oil and power installations, and in public safety. Spot is in mass production and currently shipping to select early adopters.”

The Spot is marketed as an industrial robot but people think much different as the comments are like “Gatling gun and Hellfire missile pods sold seperately.” or “The day they learn to swap batteries on their own is the day they dominate the world” or “The new Terminator remake looks weird.”
