Comedic adverts are always at their best when handled by the world’s most powerful brands. Here, we go over the new “Buttermilk Crispy Tenders” advert by McDonald’s. We’ll give this ad a rating out of 10 for memorability, effectiveness, style, humor, and execution. Have a read through our review and compare our thoughts to your own first impressions.

Memorability – 8 / 10

The main character, Marianne Muellerleile, will relate to anyone that has a relationship with pretty much any elderly figure, especially if that relationship has any food-based resemblance to the notion in this clip. It’s a clever way to make a certain promise; that the product is as good as you would expect a high-quality home-made version to be. The ad is filled with laugh out loud gags that will stick in the minds of all adult and teenage segments alike. Even seniors are likely to grasp at least some of the comedic references and scenes that are presented.

Effectiveness 8 / 10

The product looks great in the visuals, the jokes are very attractive to a wide range of markets, and the final message is delivered with great clarity. They are almost saying; “we know home-made can sometimes be unbeatable, but we come very close”. Not all product releases by Mcdonald’s come with commercials that posses such captivating scripts. We are used to seeing very simple sequences showing the food in pristine form with cliche voice-overs explaining the new angle. But this advert has more character and depth. It is perhaps a sign that McDonald’sis keen to develop a more enriched relationship with modern audiences through social media sharing, as opposed to simply making conventional TV shout-outs.

Style – 7 / 10

The visuals are crisp and portray the main character as a cheeky senior perfectly. The gags are not cheesy or sparse but hit well with supreme quality. Many family units will find themselves laughing aloud as well as eager to try the new Tenders on their next visit to the drive through; perhaps quoting lines from this catchy script.

Heart or Humor – 8 / 10

We are very impressed with the humor. It’s as relevant to modern themes as it is thought-provoking. Mcdonald’s is sharply reacting to the increasing demand for healthier products, more adult family oriented humor and greater transparency. This ad is a reflection of their efforts to connect with a market that cares about the truth, just as much as they care about quality entertainment. The script features no gimmicky catchphrases, overly sensitive promises or fake looking imagery, It purely provides good comedic value.

Execution – 9 / 10

Just as many would expect from the largest fast food chain in the world, this new campaign has been executed with flawless production value, a clear message and more than flattering images of the product on offer. Many of McDonald’s most regular visitors will find the content refreshingly memorable compared to past promotional ads, and may consequently find themselves trying some of “Grandma’s Buttermilk Tenders” then next time they fancy take out.
