Tiffany & Co. has opened its holiday 2026 season with “You & Me,” a two-minute film for the new “Love is a Gift” campaign, starring new House ambassador Amanda Seyfried and directed by Derek Cianfrance. Hiring the man behind Blue Valentine to sell Christmas jewelry is a clear statement of intent: this is meant to feel like cinema, not a catalogue. For most of its running time it does. The question is whether a film this restrained still has room to be about Tiffany.

WHAT HAPPENS ON SCREEN

The film opens in an Upper East Side townhouse in the present day. A woman decorating the Christmas tree finds an old Tiffany Blue Box dated December 1992, and the box pulls her back to a single December day in early-90s New York. In the flashback, Seyfried plays her mother, a working choreographer, who takes her young daughter along through a ballet rehearsal, past the Tiffany holiday windows and into her own adult world. At the end of the day the mother hands over a Blue Box with a hand-painted ornament inspired by Jean Schlumberger’s Bird on a Rock. Back in the present, the grown daughter passes the same ornament to her own child.

The emotional point, as the agency describes it, is the moment a child first sees her mother as a woman with a craft and a life of her own, not just the person who makes the holidays happen. It is soundtracked by a slowed, folk-leaning reworking of The Wannadies’ 1994 “You and Me Song,” which turns a song about young romance into one about a mother and daughter.

CREDITS

Brand: Tiffany & Co. Campaign: “Love is a Gift.” Film: “You & Me,” 2:02, published on Tiffany & Co.’s official YouTube channel on October 28, 2026, with a 60-second cut alongside. Agency: American Haiku (CCO Thom Glover, CD Ben Muckensturm). Production: RadicalMedia US. Director: Derek Cianfrance. Cinematography: Arseni Khachaturan. Production design: Karen Murphy. Editorial: Final Cut, editor Jim Helton. Colour: Company 3 New York, colourist Tom Poole. VFX: Significant Others. Music and sound: Machine and Citizen CIT. Talent: Amanda Seyfried. Credits per Tiffany & Co., LBB, shots and The Hollywood Reporter.

THE EXECUTION

American Haiku says it wanted to move away from the gloss-and-montage language of luxury holiday advertising, and the craft backs that up. The camera stays close and handheld, the performances are small, and the 90s period detail is lived-in rather than costume-party nostalgia. Karen Murphy’s townhouse is dressed with real Tiffany archive pieces, including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Wisteria lamp, so the brand’s history sits in the background instead of being pointed at. Seyfried is the right casting for this register. She plays the mother as busy, warm and a little distracted, which makes the child’s point of view more believable than another serene, perfect parent in a perfect coat.

The music choice is the smartest single decision. A 90s indie pop song, slowed down and made tender, signals the period, gives parents of a certain age a jolt of recognition and carries the title without anyone having to say it. The commissioned ornament is also a neat device: an object built to come back every year, which is exactly what Tiffany wants its gifts to become.

WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T

What works: the insight. Seeing a parent at work, and realising they had a whole life before you, is a real and rarely used holiday emotion, and it is far more specific than the usual “magic of giving” line. Cianfrance gives it room, and two minutes is the right length for a story built on looks rather than dialogue.

What doesn’t: the heirloom structure. Present-day discovery, flashback, object handed down to the next generation is a template we have seen from watch brands and jewelers for decades, and the film follows it without a single surprise. The gift at the centre is a Christmas ornament made only for the film, not something you can actually buy, so the product story is softer than it looks. And for all the talk of moving away from gloss, this is still a very expensive New York with a Fifth Avenue window stop, which slightly undercuts the intimacy it works so hard to build. It is tasteful to the point of being careful.

VERDICT

“You & Me” is one of the better-made luxury holiday films of the season so far: patient, well cast and anchored in an honest emotional idea rather than sparkle. Seyfried and Cianfrance make the familiar heirloom formula feel more human than it usually does. It just never breaks that formula, and the brand payoff is a feeling more than a reason to walk into the store. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
