Debenhams has fired the starting gun on the UK Christmas ad season again, and it has done it with a four-minute short film rather than a 60-second weepie. “Christmas. For Everyone” sends Emily Atack home to a fictional English village for the annual Christmas party, puts Mathew Horne in her path and lets a snowstorm, a power cut and a 90s pop star sort out the rest. It is warm, well shot and pleasantly British. It is also four minutes long for an idea that would fit comfortably in two.

WHAT HAPPENS ON SCREEN

Atack plays Tina, back in the village for the first time in about ten years and visibly unsure about it. Her friends drag her to the party at the village hall, where Kym Marsh runs the bar as Katie the landlady, a raffle is being called and the evening’s surprise guest is running late. Horne plays Chris, the old school friend who never left, and the film lets the two of them circle each other through a few awkward exchanges. Tina’s friends notice that Chris has “had a bit of a glow-up,” which is about as close as the script gets to a romantic line.

Then the plans start to fall apart. It starts snowing, the headline act is stuck, and the host pushes “local boy” Chris onto the stage with a guitar to fill the gap. Outside, a neighbour called Martin has wired so many Christmas lights to his house that he takes the whole village’s power down. The party spills out into the dark street, and when the lights come back on, Gabrielle walks in and closes the night with “Dreams” while Tina and Chris finally kiss in the middle of the crowd. The end card reads “Christmas. For Everyone.”

CREDITS

Brand: Debenhams. Film: “Christmas. For Everyone,” 4:18, published on Debenhams’ official YouTube channel on October 14, 2026, with the campaign launching October 15. Creative: Debenhams in-house team, the first time the brand has made its Christmas work entirely in-house. Production: Pulse Films, London. Director: Tom Day. Cast: Emily Atack, Mathew Horne, Kym Marsh, Gabrielle, with creators Saffron Barker, Jay Beech and Sammi Maria. Editing: The Quarry, editor Jack Cantrell. Colour and VFX: The Post Arm, with Mad Labs VFX. Sound and music: Brother Music. Media: SMB Agency. Credits per Debenhams, shots, LBB and FashionNetwork.

THE EXECUTION

Tom Day shoots the village hall exactly the way you remember one: tinsel curtains behind a tiny stage, paper cups, a buffet of sausage rolls and too many fairy lights. The colour is warm, the camera stays close to faces and the cast play it straight, which keeps the film on the right side of cosy instead of drifting into panto. Atack is good at the slightly guarded returnee, Horne brings a decent, ordinary charm to Chris, and Marsh gets the few laughs the script allows. The Gabrielle cameo is the best decision in the film. She appears late, sings one song and leaves the story to the couple, which is exactly how a cameo should work.

It is also notable that Debenhams launched this on YouTube first, as a long-form film people choose to watch, rather than as a TV spot. For a brand that no longer has a single physical store, that is a sensible place to start, and the four-minute length is clearly designed for that platform.

WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T

What works: the tone. The film embraces the idea that Christmas goes wrong and that the wrong bits are the ones you remember, which is a more honest premise than another perfect family around a perfect table. The neighbour with the overloaded light display is a genuinely relatable British joke, and the cast feel like people who might actually live in the same postcode.

What doesn’t: the length and the plotting. Four minutes gives the story room, but the beats are all familiar ones, the returning girl, the boy who stayed, the snow, the blackout, the big song, and none of them surprises. The middle section, with Chris filling time on stage, drags. The brand role is also thin. A yellow Debenhams logo sits in the corner of the frame for the entire film, which feels like a workaround for the fact that the story itself barely needs Debenhams at all. There is a strange tension, too, in an online-only retailer building its Christmas around a physical village hall and a sense of place it no longer has on the high street. The outfits look good, but nobody would leave this film knowing what Debenhams wants them to buy.

VERDICT

“Christmas. For Everyone” is a likable, nicely crafted opener to the 2026 season and a confident first outing for Debenhams’ in-house team. Tom Day gives it warmth, the cast give it charm and Gabrielle gives it a proper ending. But it is a long walk to a predictable kiss, and the brand is more watermark than idea. Rating: 3 out of 5.
