Lexus TZ “Notification Melody” Ad Review – Phone Pings Turn Into MGMT

Car ads love to sell connectivity: bigger screens, more apps, a cabin that talks to everything. The Lexus TZ Notification Melody commercial, a Team One spot for the first-ever Lexus TZ, the brand’s first three-row, all-electric SUV, argues the opposite. Six people share one car, five of them are lost in their phones, and the pings from those phones slowly turn into a song everyone knows. It is a neat idea with a clean payoff, even if the film ends up a little too pleased with itself.

WHAT HAPPENS ON SCREEN

We open on the dark green TZ rolling down a city street, with the small print “Prototype shown. Options shown.” at the bottom of the frame. Inside, a wide shot from the dashboard shows the full cabin: a driver, a front passenger and four people spread across the second and third rows, all heads down. A phone on the center console lights up. A quick montage follows of passengers scrolling, one man in the third row pulling his phone out as if on cue.

The sound is where the spot lives. Isolated notification chimes start to stack, and by about the eight-second mark the pitched dings are clearly playing the opening synth riff of MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.” The front passenger reaches for the center screen, the display reads “Time to Pretend” from “Oracular Spectacular” by MGMT, she taps play, and the studio track drops in with drums and bass. The driver glances back and smiles, heads come up, someone turns a physical volume dial, the man in the back slides his phone into his jacket, and a blonde passenger laughs. A wide shot under the panoramic glass roof shows the whole car finally looking at each other.

Over the back half, a voiceover makes the thesis explicit: “The most powerful innovations don’t connect us to everything. They connect us to each other. Because the greatest measure of an automobile is how it makes you feel.” A front three-quarter tracking shot of the TZ, a rear shot with “That’s the Standard of Amazing,” and a black card reading “LEXUS – Experience Amazing” close it out.

CREDITS

Brand: Lexus (first-ever Lexus TZ, three-row all-electric SUV, arriving this winter per the YouTube description). Film: “The First-Ever TZ: Notification Melody,” uploaded to the official Lexus USA YouTube channel on October 5, 2026. Agency: Team One, per LBB (October 23, 2026), which reports this as one of five TV spots in the integrated campaign “The Power of Connection,” alongside “Sunbathing” and “Good Read” (Team One) and “The Longest Goodbye” and “In Lock Step” (created with Walton Isaacson). Music: MGMT, “Time to Pretend,” as shown on the in-car screen. Not cited in the sources we checked: director, production company, editor, sound design house and cast.

THE EXECUTION

The smartest choice is building the hook out of the problem itself. Every viewer knows the sound of a car full of buzzing phones, and turning that irritation into a recognizable riff gives the spot a genuine “wait, is that…” moment before the track arrives. “Time to Pretend” is a sly pick, too: a song about chasing a fantasy life, used in an ad about putting the fantasy down. Whether Team One meant the irony or not, it works in their favor.

The car is shown well but not shouted about. The panoramic roof, the lounge-like rear seats and the quiet cabin are the actual product claims, and the edit lets them sit in the background of human reactions rather than stopping for a feature tour. The grey-green paint and soft city light keep it in Lexus’s familiar register of calm luxury.

WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T

What works: the sound gag is simple, legible with or without the voiceover, and memorable enough to name the spot. It sells an EV’s quietness without a single decibel claim, and it gives a three-row SUV a social reason to exist beyond hauling kids.

What doesn’t: the logic wobbles. The moment of connection is triggered by a passenger tapping play on a giant touchscreen, so the film’s cure for screen addiction is another screen. Once the song kicks in, the reactions turn generic, a carousel of smiling faces that could belong to any car ad of the last decade, and the voiceover then explains a point the chimes had already made. A braver cut would have trusted the melody and dropped the sermon. The casting is also so polished that the “everyone on their phones” setup never feels lived in.

VERDICT

“Notification Melody” has one genuinely clever idea and executes it cleanly, which is more than most EV launch ads manage. It just cannot resist underlining its own message, and its anti-screen moral is delivered by a touchscreen. Still, as an introduction to the Lexus TZ, it makes quietness and togetherness feel like features worth paying for. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
