Every Christmas, Amazon has to decide whether it is a store or a feeling. “Joy Delivered,” posted on the brand’s official YouTube channel on November 5, 2026, chooses the feeling. Directed by Mark Molloy through Smuggler and created by Amazon’s in-house team, the 2:31 film follows a traveler named Joy, played by New Zealand actress Kate Laidler, as she tries to get home after the weather shuts the airport. The parcels in her bag become the fare. It is a neat trick. It is also, scene after scene, the same trick.

A canceled board and a bag of gifts

It opens in a departures hall dressed for the season, with a tree, tinsel and a board of canceled flights. An announcement confirms the news: severe weather has grounded everything, happy holidays. Joy sits with a silver suitcase and a tote of Amazon boxes and wrapped presents, then walks out into the snow.

A bus marked “Not in Service” picks her up in the mountains. When the road ends she leaves the driver an Amazon box on the dash and climbs into a red tracked truck with a donkey trailer. The people on board ferry her across a snowfield; she thanks them with a wrapped gift and sets off on foot.

Here the film lets itself get strange, and it is better for it. Joy’s case gets away from her on a frozen inlet. She goes down with it while a penguin looks on, then walks toward a lit village with three penguins beside her. A fishing boat strung with Christmas lights takes her across the water. In the cabin it is warm and cluttered, a cat on someone’s lap, and she laughs on deck as the weather rolls past.

Night, a small town, a restaurant called Golden Canton. The last lift is the film’s one real visual gag: a taxi driven by a giant, his dashboard ornaments the size of toys, his boots filling the snow when they step out. She pays him with a gold parcel tagged “To: Sis.” He opens it and finds a tiny reindeer ornament in his hands. Alone on the street she checks her bag. One gift is left, green paper and gold ribbon, tagged “To: Mom.” She reaches the porch of a lit house and falls into her mother’s arms. The end card holds on the house, two figures in the doorway, and the Amazon smile.

What works

Molloy and cinematographer Joost van Gelder give Amazon a proper winter picture, shot in New Zealand: a cold teal airport, a bus on a mountain bridge, a cliff above a pale sea, a town street dressed in lights. For a delivery company, making the journey look expensive is the right call. The parcels work as props with a job. Each box or wrapped gift is the price of the next ride, so Amazon stays on screen without stopping the film for a shopping list.

The details help. The “To: Sis” and “To: Mom” tags make the giveaways specific instead of generic. The giant cabbie is the only time the film commits to fairy-tale logic, and the ornament joke lands because the scale is already there on the dashboard. Using “Golden Slumbers” is almost too tidy – “once there was a way to get back homeward” – but Campaign reports the track blends alternate Abbey Road takes, so it does not sound like a new cover built for the brief. John Lewis already used the song, with Elbow, on “Moz the Monster” in 2017. Amazon is borrowing a proven Christmas ache rather than inventing one.

Where it falls short

The idea is a loop. Get help, hand over a gift, cut to the next vehicle. After the bus, you can forecast the farmers, the boat and the taxi. Two minutes and thirty-one seconds is a long time to spend on one transaction repeated four times, and the pretty middle stretch adds scenery, not a new thought. Naming the heroine Joy, then titling the film “Joy Delivered,” is the sort of wink that does the critic’s job for you. You are never allowed to forget that the woman, the feeling and the network are supposed to be the same thing.

There is also a convenient morality to it. The kindness of strangers is real and worth filming. The fact that every act of kindness is repaid with an Amazon parcel is brand logic dressed up as folk wisdom. Jo Shoesmith, Amazon’s global chief brand officer, has said the film is about delivering something that actually means something, a nicer way of saying what the boxes already say. And for all the talk of presence over presents, Joy does not arrive empty-handed. Mom’s gift survives the trip. The hug still works. The metaphor would have been braver if it had not.

The verdict

“Joy Delivered” is Amazon’s most handsome holiday film in years, and a clear step up from last year’s product parade. Molloy finds real weather and a few images – the penguins, the giant’s ornament – that will survive the season. What it does not find is a second idea. The odyssey is lovely to look at and easy to summarize, which is both the point and the problem. As a Christmas ad it will do its job. As storytelling, it is a first-class journey on a single-track line.
