Charles Barkley has now lost weight on camera for Ro twice, and the brand has figured out that the weight is not the product. The mouth is. “Sardines,” one of two new 30-second spots Ro posted this week (the other is “New Suit”), goes back to the fake-shoot format the telehealth company used for Barkley’s 2025 “Big Mouth” launch: a straight-faced testimonial that keeps getting wrecked by the people behind the camera. It is quick, it is likable, and it is a GLP-1 ad that would rather you laughed than read the small print.

WHAT HAPPENS ON SCREEN

We open on the polished version of the ad: Barkley in burgundy scrubs-style loungewear on a white stool, a giant “ro” logo behind him and a floating “48lbs” graphic with a downward-sloping line. He holds an injection pen and delivers the line, “I’ve lost 48 pounds on GLP-1s on Ro. They really work.” Somebody calls cut, somebody calls it a wrap, and then the real ad begins. “It’s not a wrap. Everyone stay exactly where you are.”

The camera swings to video village, where the crew is not being kind. “Woof, that was rough.” “How soon till he gains the weight back?” “Like when he did the all-sardine diet?” Cut to the flashback, the best image in the spot: Barkley in a denim apron in a marble kitchen buried under tins of fish, with a cookbook called Living Lean Sardines propped up front. “Ew, Charles, is that you?” “Still smells like fish.” Back on set, Barkley turns around: “Y’all know I can hear y’all, right?” He gets one more product line in – “I tried a lot of quick fixes, but this is different. GLP-1s on Ro actually stick” – and walks off with the closer: “To think I was gonna share my sardines with these people.” End card: “barkley’s on ro,” then “weight loss on ro.”

CREDITS

Brand: Ro. Spot: “Sardines” (0:30), published on Ro’s official YouTube channel on October 29, 2026, alongside the companion spot “New Suit.” Talent: Charles Barkley. No agency, director or production company is credited on the video or in the coverage we found. The 2025 “Big Mouth” spots that set up this format were made by Young Hero and directed by Brandon “Beedy” Pierce, but we have not seen those credits confirmed for the new work, so we are not attributing it.

THE EXECUTION

The structure is borrowed straight from Big Mouth, and that is fine, because the structure works. Starting on the fake, perfectly lit testimonial lets Ro have it both ways: it gets the clean claim, the number on screen and the pen in hand in the first five seconds, then spends the next 25 seconds making fun of exactly that kind of ad. The behind-the-scenes look is convincing – lighting rigs, a dolly, monitors, a crew in folding chairs – and the cut to the sardine kitchen is a proper sight gag, art-directed with real commitment. The fish cookbook alone is worth a pause.

Barkley is the reason any of this lands. He does not act so much as react, and his “Y’all know I can hear y’all, right?” is delivered with the weary timing of a man who has heard a lot worse on live television. The closing sardine line is a good button because it is petty, and petty is his brand.

WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T

What works: the self-awareness. GLP-1 advertising has become a wall of before-and-after testimonials, and Ro’s smartest move is to let the cynicism into the room. The crew says out loud what a lot of viewers think – that celebrities lose weight, gain it back and then sell you the next fix – and Barkley gets to answer it. In an ad category that usually sounds like a clinic brochure, that is a genuine point of difference. It also feels pointedly human at a time when more and more ads in this space look generated.

What doesn’t: the joke does the selling, and the selling gets thin. “This is different” and “they actually stick” are the entire argument, and the spot never says why Ro is different from any other telehealth GLP-1 provider. The crew’s question – how soon until he gains it back – is the most honest line in the ad, and the answer it gets is a shrug and a walk-off. Meanwhile the fine print on screen notes that ongoing use of the medication is required to maintain results, which is the actual answer to the crew’s question and the one thing the comedy is built to step around. There is also the sameness problem. This is the second round of the exact same fake-shoot gag, and “New Suit” runs the same play again in the same week. It is a formula now, and Barkley is carrying it.

VERDICT

“Sardines” is a tight, funny 30 seconds that makes a medical subscription feel like a sitcom cold open, and Barkley is too good at being interrupted to waste. But the ad wins the room by joking about the question it never answers. Rating: 3 out of 5.
