This year’s British Christmas ad race has been heavy on tears: lost pets, lonely grandparents, long journeys home. M&S has decided to skip the lump in the throat and go for a raised eyebrow. “The Home of Christmas,” posted on the retailer’s official YouTube channel on November 6, 2026, is a three-minute comedy from Mother London, directed by Shannon Murphy through Smuggler, in which Santa, played by James Norton, shaves off his beard and goes undercover in the real world. Lucy Punch plays Mrs Claus. Katherine Jenkins sings the soundtrack. It is the most fun anyone has had in a UK Christmas ad this year, and also, for a solid minute in the middle, a very well lit shopping list.

The shave heard round the North Pole

The setup is genuinely funny. In a log cabin under a snowy sky, Mrs Claus looks up from her book and asks, as casually as a wife can, whether her husband has ever thought about losing the beard. “They say it takes years off.” Santa is horrified – it is his thing – and then, in the very next beat, he is standing at the sink with a towel, a bare chin and a bare torso. Punch’s reaction is the best acting in any Christmas ad so far this season: she does not swoon, she recalculates. Murphy, whose credits include “Killing Eve” and “Babyteeth,” knows the joke is in the pause, and she lets it sit.

Yes, there is a lingering shirtless shot, and yes, the British press has already called him a shredded Santa. It is a cheap laugh, but it is an honest one, and it tells the audience within twenty seconds that this is not going to be a weepy. Norton’s new plan follows: he has never actually experienced Christmas himself, so now that no one will recognise him, he wants to see what it is really like out there. “Oh, absolutely no one’s going to recognise you,” says Mrs Claus, in the tone of a woman who has just discovered she married a model.

Where the story turns into a store tour

Then Santa lands in a London of red buses, lit windows and an M&S frontage dressed like a grand hotel, and the film changes gear. A street Santa in full costume passes him without a flicker. He drifts into a choir performance where Katherine Jenkins is singing her slowed, swelling cover of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” A stranger invites him to a neighbours’ party, and the next stretch is a sequence of tiny compliments that sound exactly like product copy: I love that suit, those earrings are amazing, what are these again, it smells like Christmas.

This is the brief showing through. M&S is putting food, fashion, home and beauty into a single Christmas campaign for the first time since 2017, and the middle of the film has to carry all four. The party is warm and beautifully dressed, but the dialogue starts doing the work of shelf labels. Norton, playing wide-eyed wonder, has very little to do except be handsome near canapes. The film is at its best when Santa is confused and at its weakest when everyone around him is merchandised.

The line that saves it

Fortunately, the script keeps one great joke in its pocket. Standing in front of the illuminated “Home of Christmas” store, Santa stares up at the sign and asks, “Who’s Mark and who’s Spencer?” It is a perfect fish-out-of-water line, it gently mocks the brand’s own name, and it lands because Norton plays it straight. Then he is back at the North Pole with a plate of mince pies, ready to tell his wife where he has been. Her answer: “Oh darling, I’ve been going for years.” The kitchen behind her is already full of M&S. The beard, they agree, is staying off.

That final button is smart. It turns Mrs Claus into the real customer and the real hero, which fits Punch’s own description of the idea: she is the one who gets the story moving. It also quietly makes the ad’s actual argument – that the magic happens in homes, not in workshops – without a voiceover having to spell it out.

Craft and casting

The craft is high-end without being heavy. DP Justin Brown shoots the cabin in amber firelight and the city in cool blue night, so the two worlds read instantly. Production designer Sherree Philips gives the North Pole a lived-in, slightly kitsch warmth that makes the joke possible. The Jenkins cover is pretty, though it pushes the film toward the very sentimentality the script is trying to dodge. Casting does most of the heavy lifting: Norton and Punch have real comic chemistry, and the ad would collapse with two lesser actors in the cabin.

The verdict

“The Home of Christmas” is the rare big-retailer Christmas ad that wants you to laugh first, and the opening and closing scenes earn it. In between, the film becomes a stylish catalogue with a celebrity walking through it, which is precisely what a four-category brief tends to produce. It is charming, well cast and refreshingly unbothered by tears. It is also three minutes long for about ninety seconds of story. Still, in a week of emotional heavy lifting from rivals, M&S has made the one people will quote: who’s Mark, and who’s Spencer?
