Argos “Tales of Argos Past” Ad Review – Richard Ayoade Gets Haunted by the Catalogue

Every British Christmas ad season now has a retailer that runs on nostalgia and a retailer that runs on jokes. Argos has decided to be both. “Tales of Argos Past,” its 2026 Christmas film from T&P, puts Richard Ayoade in the Scrooge role and sends the brand’s toy mascots Connie and Trevor to haunt him, A Christmas Carol style, into admitting that Argos sells more than toys. It is the sharpest casting of the season so far, and a 60-second spot that knows exactly what it is selling.

WHAT HAPPENS ON SCREEN

Ayoade sits on a green sofa in a mustard corduroy jacket and red tie, phone in hand, stuck on what to get his mother. Someone suggests Argos. His reply is pure Ayoade: “Argos? For Mother? They’re a toy shop!” Cue the haunting. Connie, the doll, glows into the room as “the ghost of Christmas presents” (the pun is the point), and Trevor, the dinosaur, announces himself as “the dinosaur of Argos past.” Ayoade’s response is a deadpan “The Dickens!” and a fair question: “Are you two a couple?”

Trevor takes him “back to where it all began,” and the film cuts to camcorder-style footage with date stamps in the corner: a small boy in a miniature version of the same jacket, sprawled on the carpet, circling the Argos catalogue. “Such a sweet kid. What happened?” “Life and despair.” The ghosts deliver the brief out loud – “You never got past the toy section, pal. Now there’s so much more” – and the room fills with floating headphones, tech and homeware. The gift turns out to be a light therapy mask (“Nothing says Christmas like advanced skincare technology”), Mother is delighted, and the ending borrows Dickens one last time: a reformed Ayoade throws open his window over a snowy street and shouts “You there, person. There is more to Argos.” A man outside: “Don’t think I’ve ever seen him smile before.”

CREDITS

Brand: Argos. Film: “Tales of Argos Past” (0:60), on Argos’s official YouTube channel; the campaign launches November 1, 2026 across TV, social and out-of-home. Agency: T&P, London (executive creative directors Chris Clarke and Matthew Moreland; creative directors Ben Fallows and Matt Deacon; creatives Becky Brice and Tom White). Production: Merman. Director: Declan Lowney. Director of photography: Benedict Spence. VFX and grade: Electric Theatre Collective (colourist Andi Chu). Edit: WORK UK (Charlie Moreton). Music: Holy Wax (composer Charlie Smith). Sound: Noble State London (Munzie Thind). Casting: Talent Republic. Starring Richard Ayoade. Credits as listed on LBB.

THE EXECUTION

Declan Lowney is a sitcom director at heart, and it shows in the best way. The spot is cut for dialogue, not for montage, and almost every line is a joke that lands on a reaction. Ayoade does very little with his face and gets a lot out of it; “Life and despair” is delivered like a weather report, and the actor’s whole persona – fussy, formal, faintly appalled by sentiment – is a better fit for Scrooge than any big-name grump the category could have hired. The mustard jacket that shrinks down onto the child in the flashback is a lovely bit of costume logic, and the camcorder footage, with its tracking lines and date stamps, sells the catalogue memory in about three seconds.

Electric Theatre Collective’s VFX are pitched right. Connie and Trevor are translucent and slightly cheap-looking on purpose, like hologram decorations, and the floating product shots in the middle section look like a catalogue page that has come off the paper. It is a clever way to do a product parade without it feeling like one.

WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T

What works: the strategy is unusually honest. Argos knows its biggest asset and its biggest problem are the same thing – the catalogue that millions of British adults remember circling as kids – and the script says so in plain words. “You never got past the toy section” is a brand brief disguised as an insult, and that is the most efficient line any Christmas ad has written this year. Running the There’s More to Argos platform through A Christmas Carol is also a neat fit, because the whole story of that book is a man being shown that he has got something wrong.

What doesn’t: the Dickens frame gets used as a delivery system rather than a story. There is no real ghost of Christmas yet to come, no stakes, and the redemption happens because of a face mask, which is a funny joke and a slightly thin emotional payoff. The middle 15 seconds, where the products float around the room, are where the spot stops being a sitcom and becomes a range announcement, and you can feel the pace drop. And Connie and Trevor still feel more like a recurring obligation than characters; Ayoade is so much funnier than his ghosts that you start to wish the ad had trusted him alone with the catalogue.

VERDICT

“Tales of Argos Past” is the rare retail Christmas ad where the casting is the idea and the idea is the strategy. Ayoade gives Argos a dry, grown-up voice that the brand badly needed, even if the story is mostly a well-dressed list of things you can now buy there. It will not make anyone cry. It does not need to. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
